The Circular Pine Trees of Aoyama (Aoyama enza-no-matsu)
from The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai
The tree in the subject was located in Ryogan-ji temple (龍巌寺) near Harajuku ([link]
), the temple still stands but the tree no longer exists. From the today's satellite map the temple garden looks way smaller than depicted in the print.
The series "The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" was created between 1826-1833, originally conceived for 36 prints, ten more were added after the original publication. It depicts the famous Mount Fuji viewed from a variety of locations and meteorological conditions. Another famous ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige (広重) also made 36 prints on the same subject thirty years later (冨士三十六景, also "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji").
